Samsung has shown Curved displays before at CES 2013 which were achieved through curved glass but I didn’t expected arrival of curved displays working on smartphone that early.
Samsung Galaxy Round
Samsung has introduced “World’s first Curved display smartphone“. Galaxy Round feature a curved 5.7 inch OLED 1080p display with thickness of 7.9mm and weight around 154g. It has a 2800mAh battery.
Samsung Galaxy Round runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Touch Wiz interface. It is powered by a 2.3Ghz MSM 8974 quad-core processor, seems to be confined to the Xiaomi Mi-3 for now, and the presence of LTE-A means MDM9x25 along with a 3GB RAM. It has 32Gb built-in storage and supports up-to-64GB microSd card slot. This curved smartphone has 13MP rear camera and 2MP front camera as well.
Samsung has also released new software to take the advantage of curved form factor. The new Roll effect to check information such as notifications and missed calls when the device is asleep. The phone also takes various advantages of motion features mainly because of phone design which allows handset to roll left and right when kept on table.
“The large screen size of the GALAXY ROUND provides additional benefits to users. Useful One-Hand Operation features bring a user’s most desired controls closer to a preferred side of the screen,” says a Samsung release.
Right now the biggest issues are with cases and other accessories due to its curve nature but it will be only a small factor after considerable market demand. Although the specs looks like you can also call it as Curved Note 3 and you should give thumbs up to Samsung for being the first one to enter into market with curved factor. The smartphone will go on sale in Korea tomorrow but no other word on international market.
